After researching this I disovered the enabling the Copy to texture should
work around the 2048 pixel limit for compiz.
It would be good if this was enabled by default. However, after installing
CompizConfig Settings Manager and enabling the copytex plugin a different
behaviour is observed: the
This is the patch to the Copy to Texture plugin I am currently using.
It appears to fix this issue.
