My comment was probably very misleading, I am still getting the bug from
the original bug report- not @Alex Li's comment.
Sorry for any confusion!

I encountered a very similar error when upgrading from Edgy to Feisty.
In my case, it seems the existence of ipython in my system prevented
python2.5-minimal to install. I could continue the upgrade process
after uninstalling ipython. Here is my traceback:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo apt-get
Upgrading to Feisty is still a problem, though, at least for me.
Paul Williams' dirty fix got me going again - thanks Paul.

Generally speaking, should python2.X fail because of a failed
compilation?
Perhaps better a warning.

This is what it looks like on my system before you install python2.5:

The problem here is that python2.5-minimal should depend on python2.5
which is does not.
If you install python2.5 then try again things should work.
Can an Ubuntu developer confirm that this is the solution and update the
dependency.

I, too am having trouble upgrading python2.5 with python2.5-minimal_2.5-5ubuntu5
I get the same error as hmusche.
As far as I can tell, the latest python2.5 package does not include a version
nimber for pyversions to read.
Then again, I don't know much about python, so I could be wrong.

Ah! A fix!
A dirty fix, though.
I have managed to get things to update properly by commenting out lines 540 and
541 of /usr/bin/pycentral, which would normally read:
if self.parse_versions:
self.version_info = pyversions.parse_versions(self.version_field)
So we now know these two lines are
