This seems to be yet another case of software failing silently, without
telling the user what needs to be fixed. It would be more useful for APT
to report, in plain English, exactly which preferences stanza appears to
be absolete.

I get similar results with aptitude also:

Thanks for the report. The bug is known and a patch/new upload is in the
backery.
The problem is that you have a stanza in one of your
/etc/apt/preferences(.d/) files which refers to a non-existent package.
Remove or comment out this stanza and APT should work again as usual.

As a test, I've downgraded APT to whatever is in Natty and everything
seems back to normal.
