To manage
the issue is that the indicatior-...-gtk2 are not installed and that
unity is still on gtk2, that should be fixed today

am in a 3D unity session, verified by the output of the command ps ax |

Manually running the indicator binaries produces output, both directly
and in the Terminal tab in which unity --reset is running, which might
be relevant. (Then these binaries exit--they do not continue running,
and invoking them manually does not work around this bug.)
