Same on my T510i upgraded from 11.04. Installing lightdm-gtk-greeter
resolved the issue for me as well. Thanks, Martin!

Oneiric won't
I get the same result with a Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop with Nvidia.

Oneiric won't start x on boot
I also have this problem. The interesting thing is that starting lightdm
again seems to work.
What I did:
Ctrl+Alt+F1
login using username and password
sudo start lightdm logout
This would bring up lightdm just like it should. I have no idea why it
would specifically during boot.

This problem still exists with the latest kernel upgrade to -10.
Desktop had patchy and intermittent operation with the earlier kernels and will
start in (I think) 2D mode with -08, it has yet to operate smoothly.

This is an X11 (or lightdm, or whatever) issue, not a video driver
issue. I have the exact same symptoms but I have a nVidia chipset on my
laptop. I also did a complete wipe and re-install and had the identical
problem when using the daily build iso for 2011-08-12. I went back to
my daily build
Exactly same problem, same HW (AMD64, Phenom CPU, Radeon HD*).
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
seemed to resolve this bug, but only was the tip of the iceberg of
getting back to normal ubuntu life.
People likely will be directed/googled here, I just want to show what
did not bring things back
I have had exactly the same problem. Installing lightdm-gtk-greeter
solved the problem for me.
