IFAIK compiz can manage workspaces (like metacity) and viewport. If the pager show only a gray rectangle, viewports are enabled (and you should have the cube) but in this case you can't do things like move windows between viewports. -- [compiz] Cube does not work

Jaap: which version of Ubuntu are you running? I think you aren't running feisty, as Seb and me. In feisty, you just need compiz-core, compiz-plugins and compiz-gnome (or kde), but not compiz-settings. If you are running other Ubuntu version, could you tell us which one, and the compiz version?
