Ok I just found out that this is caused by the /boot/ partition getting
full. Looks like old kernel images are kept indefinitely, which
eventually eats up all the space on the /boot/ partition. I removed very
old kernels, and ran apt-get -f install which fixed the issue.

the program failed on boot up i restarted the program and it seems to be
working.
