Ok, am now running the latest daily build Live CD of feisty on the
L20-197 and it seems to be running fine. Booted up with no problems.
Sound works. Wi-fi works - although the upper-right network connector
tells me I have no network!
But looks good so far. Am going to go for a full install
Runs fine on daily february 8th, on Compaq HP nc 8230

Got back into LiveCD, but unfortunately it didn't detect my network or
any of my USB's so had no means of saving the files. Have taken a stack
of photos of them, but far too many to post separately here. Any ideas?

It appears that your kernel is unable to properly load the driver for
some of your hardware.
Are you able to get to the LiveCD?
Could you attach /var/log/syslog? And the output of `dmesg` and `lspci
-vvn`?

Is there a crash or anything after that? Can you send digital
photographs of these screens you describe?
Also, have you tried the CD Check option to ensure that it downloaded
and burned properly?

Ok, so a strange thing happened. It turned out that I hadn't checked the
integrity of the discs (it was late!). The DVD was fine, but still hung at the
same place; the CD had an error on it so I burned a new copy. This also stopped
at the same series of error messages. I had to split the screen

Also - just remembered - the sound didn't work either - gave me some error
message but I didn't write it down (too busy trying to set up wireless, sorry -
will redo if required).
