I wanted to change the settings from using proxy (via automatic
configuration) to direct connection. Than I ran aptitude and it was
still trying to reach the internet through proxy.

I think this is not a duplicate. The distinction I see is that bug
#40360 seems to be about simply changing the gnome proxy preferences
(only newly opened terminals will reflect the change, which is
expected.) This bug looks like it is about when the

bug #83619 (the one I added a comment to) according to comment #2 from
quinnman. But I see that I misread it, and it's not about changing the
automatic proxy configuration script, it's about ceasing to use the
automatic proxy config. So never mind
