I am currently uploading new Ubuntu packages (1.7.1-1ubunu2) with the
fixed hpfax backend to
http://www.linux-foundation.org/~till/tmp/ubuntu/feisty/hplip/
These will get into Feisty soon.

hpfax is called by CUPS to detect whether there are HP fax devices. It
crashed because most probably the HPLIP daemons are nor running.
Can you do
sudo /etc/init.d/hplip restart
and then try the printer setup again?
If the problem occurs again, do
ps auxwww | grep hpiod
ps auxwww | grep hpssd

hpfax is called by CUPS to detect whether there are HP fax devices. It
crashed because most probably the HPLIP daemons are nor running.
I don't have HP -machines, so I have taken off hplip for a long ago. After
on, no error messages.
But do I have to keep it on? I don't really need it..
HPLIP is installed and active by default in Ubuntu so that as much
hardware as possible just works.
Unfortunately, the hpfax CUPS backend is not prepared for machines where
no HPLIP daemons are running and perhaps the developers did not test it
on distributions with automatic crash reporting
Don, can you modify the hp and hpfax CUPS backends in a way that they do
not crash on a system without running HPLIP daemons but simply exit
silently?

So as a quick workaround remove the executable bit from the hpfax CUPS
backend:
chmod -x /usr/lib/cups/backend/hpfax
it works ok.

Please replace your /usr/lib/cups/backend/hpfax file by the attached
hpfax.py file and make it executable:
chmod +x /usr/lib/cups/backend/hpfax
Then try to add a printer and see whether the crash reporter does not
get triggered any more.
