Got the same issue and removing packages build-essential and gcc-4.4
worked for me too.

I could solve this problem by inspecting the file /var/log/dist-
upgrade/apt.log.
I could see there at the last lines that the culprit for the unmet
dependencies was gcc-4.4. I uninstalled buil-essential and gcc-4.4 and
now the error is gone and the upgrade has proceeded normally. I will

I initially updated from 11.04 to 11.10 with no problem at all. So I
then decided to do a fresh install to see how that would go and that's
when I had the same problem you are having. I am now unable to update
because of it.

update then sudo apt-get -u upgrade.
