I agree with Hernando from #7 in that I don't see the gap
anymore...somehow I managed to cripple my 11.10 VirtualBox install
during a partial upgrade and the Natty host started freezing up
completely after that, so I decided just to install the latest daily

I thought maybe changing the wallpaper or logging out and back in would
provide a workaround, but it didn't. This issue occurs using any of the
available wallpapers (including the Fabric one I chose to help make the
problem stand out better).
