The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:
1) If you are comfortable
I know this problem also its because kernel update if you install
Atheros AR5007EG it installs to kernel if i am not wrong so after you
reboot you get new kernel so you need to install it again.

It would be nice if ubuntu include the driver in 8.04.

I know and I am using linux-2.6.20 in several incarnations.
All of them have unstable wireless connections.
Wireless is difficult to get started and even more difficult to keep
'alive' over an extended period of time.
And it is not signal strength.

Thank you for the instructions. I suspected something like that.
Meanwhile, I have first removed the update to 2.6.17-11. Then installed
the restricted modules and reinstalled the update. Things are working again.
Thanks for your help.

Sorry for the long delay, I should have subscribed earlier.
The kernel modules needed to interface with the Atheros card need to be
installed alongside the new kernel due to ABI changes.
This should be taken care of by the linux-restricted-modules package,
which depends on the latest version.
Do you have the linux-restricted-modules-generic and
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.17-11-generic installed?
or check the contents of the /lib/modules/2.6.17-11-generic/madwifi/ directory.
Could you provide the output (if any) of 'sudo modprobe ath_pci'

Thanks for your bug report. Could you please add the output of 'lspci

The information you requested is in the attachment. Kernel version according to
boot screen is:
a. 2.6.17-10 generic (working network)
b. 2.6.17-11 generic (no network).
Strange thing is:
Both versions lead to the same desktop and file system. Any saved file, e-mail
