I opened a clip and was able to save a 20 second video from ogv to avi.
The new pitivi has been in the desktop PPA for the past week and I
haven't heard complaints yet. I don't actually do anything with video
editing though.

Did you test a few basic use cases with the new version? Like opening a
clip, and saving it back in a different format?
The risk seems acceptable for me here, as we have a rather good upstream
connection.

rather than the intermediate unstable releases or pre-releases (it's a

Oneiric currently has pitivi 0.14.2 which was an unstable version.
0.14.91 was released yesterday which is a pre-release for 0.15 which is
expected 26 September.
Upstream unfortunately didn't provide a handy NEWS file. The changes since
0.14.2 are supposed to
Bug 812671 has a dozen duplicates and upstream says 0.14.91 fixes the
bug.
