Since the issue can't be reproduced marking as invalid.

Thanks for the hint, I checked and the alt key wasn't used in any event
(and it's behaviour was set as 'Default').
BUT! today we updated our three Oneiric systems and they started working
correctly, so I guess the bug report should be marked as invalid?

It is not a bug.
But check if the [ALT] key is bounded as shortcut for another action.
Hint: go to keyboard preferences Layouts [Tab] Options... [Btn]:
and make sure that you don't use [ALT] as a key for changing layout or choosing
3rd level.
