Interesting - I was getting this bug using GDM Unity (3d) - it was
shortly followed by a Metacity crash report (Bug #797078 ?) which seemed
odd - should metacity be running in 3d? Deleting .config seems to have
cured it but could just be a coincidence as I have done a batch of
updates since...

After a search of the ubuntu forums I downgraded to
lightdm_0.9.5-0ubuntu2 (which had been upgraded to
lightdm_0.9.6.0ubuntu1 today) and Unity 3D is back for me. Looks like
something is wrong with the new light dm version.
