Notice that on start the Wallpaper option is highlighted, even if I have
chosen to use Pictures and Folders

Apparently this is gnome-control-center. This is not available by
default on Xubuntu, so you may have installed it. As you can guess, the
wallpaper's settings from gnome-control-center won't affect xfdesktop4.

Yeah, took me a while to figure it out: It stems from the fact that
nautilus -n is started on login. I have *no* idea why.
