Can you try in a GNOME3 session, or XFCE that uses metacity but with the
~ classic GNOME2 look? I'm generally biased towards that being a
metacity problem.

I don't think that's unity-2d specific, Evolution has issues with
fitting on a small (height, mostly, AFAIK) screen, I got that on GNOME3,
I don't think it's any different for u2d, can you confirm?

Yes, Evolution has general issues here. But this one is specific: When
maximizing, the Evolution window content doesn’t change its size and
position at all. The issue is absent with Unity 3D on the same machine,
where Evolution maximizes properly (with the usual glitches on small
screens).
