Public bug reported:

Can anyone help?

I upgraded my Dell laptop to Ubuntu 11.10 from a fully updated 11.04
version about 3 days ago. The upgrade went textbook, if slowly and some
hours later I had a fully functioning 'Ocelot' version of Ubuntu
running.

I logged in for the 1st time and defaulted to the new Unity 3D GUI
(which is listed as Ubuntu when you click the little cog wheel on the
login screen – just a note, if you want to call it UNITY, please try to
do so everywhere).

However, I did see the new (initially) impressive 3D GUI – unlike many
adverse comments I've seen from irate users since completing the
upgrade, maybe because I live in the real world, the fact that I may
wait 1 or 2 seconds longer to use Unity over GNOME or Unity 2D really
doesn't concern me that much. There isn't much anyone can do with 2
seconds … or even 5; this is the initial release and like all the
earlier versions of Ubuntu, I'm confidant that problems will be fixed
overtime – that's the main reason why I dumped the Micro$oft offering
that came pre-installed on my laptop.

What really does annoy me however was when I tried to use CCSM under
Unity 3D following much 'good advice' from various experts; my principal
aim was only to stop the left Launcher bar continually disappearing
whenever any window overlaid it. You can apparently use CCSM to do
this.

After the CCSM GUI appeared and I started to navigate around it, the
sucker froze, i.e. CCSM not my laptop. I tried to close the window – no
success. So I used the 'kill -9' command to quit CCSM – this worked …
and immediately I lost the entire left Launcher bar completely … and the
upper Task bar became entirely changed losing the standard buttons such
as Power, Date/Time, ...

… this is a screen dump (Can't add Image - please send me an email
address and I'll forward it)

Using a terminal window, I rebooted the laptop (i.e. no power button on
the task bar), tried logging in again with the Unity/Ubuntu 3D GUI and
saw exactly the same screen with no Launcher and a useless Task bar.
Again via a terminal window, I rebooted and this time selected
Unity/Ubuntu 2D on the login screen. This worked fine restoring the 2D
version of the Launcher bar and the Task bar as I wanted. I'm
continuing to work with Unity 2D until I can find how to fix the 3D
issues.

So my question is … can someone please tell me the steps I need to go
through to resurrect the Unity 3D GUI. I've tried all the suggestions
about 'unity –restart' and they do seem to partially work until you kill
the terminal window where you issue the command and then you're back to
the same useless GUI desktop.

I even thought of removing Unity 3D entirely using the Ubuntu Software
Centre (note: correct English spelling of that final word) and then
reinstalling; any ideas on the efficacy or danger of that approach?

Lastly, I have heard suggestions on the web that Compiz is the real
culprit and that we all need to wait until that turkey is fixed; again
can anyone (e.g. Mr. Shuttleworth?) please provide some authoritative
guidance. There is little point trying to solve a problem at the user
workstation if the real culprit is bad code from the supplier.

Any/all help gratefully accepted and acknowledged.
