Hey, I had the same problem with Kubuntu 11.10 and firefox. It wouldn't kept saying set default browser and try again when firefox was set as the default browser. So I went ahead and installed Chrome (actuall chrome, not the chromium package, but I don't know if it matters) and clicked set as
