Same problem using LibreOffice v3.5.3.2 with Ubuntu 12.04. I just
freshly installed my system. And if I print it or export the document to
PDF, the gray color is preserved.

I am also affected by this bug. I run the updated version of Lubuntu
12.04 beta 2 and LibreOffice 3.5.1.2, Build ID: 350m1(Build:102). If I
create a text-string which is formatted with automatic text color it is
grey. I can easily perceive the difference if I hard-format that string
with black text
I can confirm this bug with Libreoffice 3.5 on Ubuntu Natty.
Changing the text color to black solves the problem. It displays
automatically black text on white blackground and white text on black or
blue background.

Okay. I tested this out.
I installed libreoffice from the software center. The font colour of
"automatic" is black.
I ran libreoffice from the CD in trial mode. The font colour of
"automatic" is grey.
Something probably happened to change the automatic colour when the
interface was redesigned to
