I am still having the same problem in Karmic, with Xchat only auto-
joining the first 281 characters in the servlist.conf. Is there a fix
for this, or should I download the source, modify CHANLEN in
src/common/xchat.h?

CHANLEN in src/common/xchat.h is set to 300. Do you still need this to be
increased?
Gutsy has 2.8.4,, if any of you could test if it is solved would also be great.

Sounds like a xchat's engine bug. You should report it to xchat-gtk.

I've run into this too, changing the definition of CHANLEN in
src/common/xchat.h fixes it. It's the same in xchat-gnome.
