Public bug reported:

Whichever method I use to close down fails
Mostly it gets stuck at the Ubuntu and symbol screen with the dots cycling 
through repeatedly.
I left it for about half an  hour once to check I wasn't being too impatient.

It started probably on Saturday 26th pm.
I have been installing recommended updates the same day.

The only other oddity I noticed was that after closing down  Firefox, I tried 
to start it again
but I got the message
Another version of Firefox was running. Close this down first.

I found no way of doing that so I tried to close down,
This may be when the problem started.
