Regarding your last port, I found this on the thread you indicated, would that
explain the folder? The Apple logo won't be displayed.
The only difference you will note, is that you will not see the apple logo on
startup anymore but a folder with a question mark instead.

With a fresh install of the 8.10 beta on a Core 2 Mac Mini (no dual
booting, guided-whole-disk), I get a flashing folder on the screen when
I try to boot without the CD. This is a pretty big problem that should
probably block release.

Even after installing this patched version of grub, on some reboots I
have the same problem.
After a power cycle, I can boot fine again. I'd like to help fix this
