There's a button the laptop which toggles external monitors, touching
one or two times enables both monitors, but I am unable to use the
maximum resolution of the external syncmaster, like I am able to in KDE.

Well... that was working until I logged out and logged back in. Now it
will only use one screen, I might have to keep playing with it for
weeks..
