changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed
In a similar way, also in the standard Gnome3 desktop (not in fallback
mode), the whole shell intermittently crashes when workspaces are
switched.

I have had compiz (which I am running with compiz --replace as a
command after login to my Gnome 3 fallback session) crash on me a couple
of times. It usually happens after switching workspace with
ctrl+alt+arrow_key. The syslog says:
