Public bug reported: When trying to run SonicWall Virtual Office from Ubuntu 11.10 (Confirmed on three installations, one of which was fresh virtual box install) the applet fails to initialize and this is output to stderr/stdout: java version "1.6.0_23" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.11pre) (6b23~pre11-0ubuntu1.11.10) OpenJDK Client VM (build 20.0-b11, mixed mode, sharing) java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.util.PropertyPermission log4j.defaultInitOverride write) at java.security.AccessControlContext.checkPermission(AccessControlContext.java:393) at java.security.AccessController.checkPermission(AccessController.java:553) at java.lang.SecurityManager.checkPermission(SecurityManager.java:549) at net.sourceforge.jnlp.runtime.JNLPSecurityManager.checkPermission(JNLPSecurityManager.java:284) at java.lang.System.setProperty(System.java:744) at rdp.applet.RdpApplet.init(RdpApplet.java:80) at sun.applet.AppletPanel.run(AppletPanel.java:436) at net.sourceforge.jnlp.NetxPanel.run(NetxPanel.java:69) at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:679) SonicWALL JavaVersionDisplayApplet - Version 3.5.13 Detected Java version: 1.6.0_23 Detected Java vendor: Sun Microsystems Inc. java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.util.PropertyPermission log4j.defaultInitOverride write) at java.security.AccessControlContext.checkPermission(AccessControlContext.java:393) at java.security.AccessController.checkPermission(AccessController.java:553) at java.lang.SecurityManager.checkPermission(SecurityManager.java:549) at net.sourceforge.jnlp.runtime.JNLPSecurityManager.checkPermission(JNLPSecurityManager.java:284) at java.lang.System.setProperty(System.java:744) at rdp.applet.RdpApplet.init(RdpApplet.java:80) at sun.applet.AppletPanel.run(AppletPanel.java:436) at net.sourceforge.jnlp.NetxPanel.run(NetxPanel.java:69) at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:679)
(by the way; is there a way to get at the stderr output of an application that is already running? Or do I have to restart firefox from a terminal to get the stderr?) The expected behavior is to get the usual confirmation window (and an additional window asking to allow "unsafe" behavior). I solved the problem temporarily by installing Sun Java as detailed in this blog post (that I wrote): http://randomtipsandtricks-hans.blogspot.com/2011/12/how-to-get-sonicwall-virtual-office.html It seems to me that either icedtea-plugin, openjdk or both have a problem since they crash instead of prompting for permission or just denying it with an explanation.
