After crashing, the upgrade tool asked me to report this bug. The link
to launchpad didn't work, that is I got the hopping icon indicating a
program start, but nothing happened.

I had the exact same thing happen to me, so I ran adept again to upgrade
and it worked the second time... I am running Ubuntu Edgy 6.10, but I
had already installed kde-desktop to switch to Ubuntu (not sure if that
matters).

Once again, ran the upgrade tool, and it crashed... The output from
