Cannot boot into Oneiric
For what it's worth, the two packages installed before the trouble
started were:
language-pack-en-base
language-pack-gnome-en-base
Both packages show up in the Update Manager in Precise as well, but they
won't install. Synaptic reports that the following packages will be
removed, which I surmise
