The libnotify patch in xchat is against an old version of libnotify and
doesn't work anymore :(

I don't think so, I have xchat 2.8.8-3ubuntu12 and this still happens. A
temporary solution is to restart the shell (i.e. run r in the command
dialog), because that flushes the notification bar

Tried rebuilding xchat 2.8.8 as distributed in Oneiric with this patch
applied. Confirmed that this fixes my issue. Would be great to see this
in the next version!
