I have the same problem:
Ubuntu Oneiric
Thunderbird hangs continuously (after a few secons, sometimes minutes)
Using IMAP
The problem started when I changed from POP == IMAP-servers (multiple accounts)
This is really a pain in the neck and I need to revert to an older version of
Thunderbird, or
Does strace show the same ?
As I got no help, not even the slightest response, I switched to TB 11.
No longer with several accounts. I'm switching using profiles. This
___is___ boring, but works stable.

I am not familiar with strace, I'm a simple user
I do think you have a point to stop using several accounts and start switching
profiles.
I don't think this is the right solution for me and as there is no help
