the apt-* tools thinks the command 'jar' can be found in the
openjdk-7-jdk package...
moses@deunan:~$ jar
The program 'jar' can be found in the following packages:
* openjdk-6-jdk
* fastjar
* gcj-4.4-jdk
* gcj-4.6-jdk
* gcj-4.5-jdk
* openjdk-7-jdk
Try: sudo apt-get install <selected package>
... but it does not get added to the normal $PATH when installed.
moses@deunan:~$ sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jdk
openjdk-7-jdk is already the newest version.
moses@deunan:~$ which jar || echo "** not found"
** not found
moses@deunan:~$ dpkg -L openjdk-7-jdk |grep /jar$
/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-i386/bin/jar
