This actually seems to be a compiz issue. I noticed that while compiling a complex GWT project, I'd encounter a load average of 15 or so, and my system would freeze up with similar symptoms as I originally described. Running htop the resource using processes were all java, although I saw compiz

Reuben, I agree completely. In some ways Linux desktops today are less responsive than they were many years ago. So let's try and fix it... First, to confirm if it is a compiz issue, could you please try logging into a Gnome Classic session? That uses compiz also, but excludes Unity. To get the
