This can be reproduced when creating a bootable USB pen drive image using
Ubuntu package UNetbootin.
Tested with latest Ubuntu Precise Beta2 i386 desktop CD image.
However, I am not sure if this is possibly a bug of Ubuntu package
unetbootin instead of initramfs-tools.

Actually the issue here is that you've run out of space in your root
partition on your persistent media. The command 'sudo apt-get clean'
may help resolve this issue by cleaning up packages you've downloaded
and already installed.
