Could you please attach the i915_error_state file which dmesg mentions?
It should explain why the hang happens.
It should be available in /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state..

Trying with i915.i915_enable_rc6=0 as a kernel boot parameter:

I was able to reproduce this with 3.2.0-17.27:

Would it be possible for you to test with RC6 disabled?
To disable RC6, do the following:
Hold down Left-Shift key to enter the Grub menu on boot
Hit 'e' to edit the kernel command line
Append i915.i915_enable_rc6=0 as a kernel boot parameter
For example: linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-17-generic <...>
So, now I retried the same using the kernel from oneiric:
Linux gilgamesch 3.0.0-16-generic #28-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 27 17:44:39 UTC
2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
and I was *not* able to reproduce the crash. So it's a regression for
sure.

Hard to say. I upgraded to precise, but haven't been using googleearth

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a
kernel version where you were not having this particular problem? This
will help determine if the problem you are seeing is the result of the
introduction of a regression, and when this regression was introduced.
