I'm fairly sure this is all fixed in Gutsy. If not, please reopen with
more details, such as your xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log, and the output from
sudo ddcprobe.

Intel 945 Video 1680X1050 resolution display outside physical dimensions of the
monitor
I have the same problem as described by Directrix1. I have a Thinkpad X41 and
an external TFT monitor with a 1680x1050 resolution. However monitor menu
information tells me that my monitor is running 1400x1050.
I see the same artifacts. Without anti-aliasing it looks really ugly.
xrandr shows
A few months got a nice e-mail from Timo Aaltonen with a link to his ftp
site with an experimental driver which works:
http://users.tkk.fi/~tjaalton/xorg72/new/
For a detailed discussion of the issues related to Intel and 1680x1050
see the Mandriva site:
I'm using xserver-xorg-video-intel 1.9.94, and on this flat panel wide
screen LCD Ubuntu says its res is set to 1680x1050. My desktop looks
right as far as icon size and everything goes except there are artifacts
(skipping every 6th vertical line). When I go through my monitor's menu
it reports
To get everything oke it is probably necessary to have x-org 7.3 (RC)
and new drivers for intel from x-org installed as well as xrandr 1.2.
See the extensive discussion provided by Mandriva for their Spring
release which also offers detailed instruction to get everything
installed separately
The 1.9.94 version got installed today, but xrandr still has no effect.
Does this work for anyone else? Just try System-Preferences-Screen
Resolution and rotate left.

First: Congratulations it works !!!
What did I do:
Kubuntu live CD (beta1)
Upgraded all packages with an X*
Removed the old i810 driver
Installed the new driver
Result Kubuntu is the first of 10 distributions I tested which gives
the correct 1680x1050 resolution. Circles are round, fonts not
could you test this package:
http://users.tkk.fi/~tjaalton/xorg72/new/xserver-xorg-video-
intel_1.9.93-1ubuntu1_i386.deb
it might replace the -modesetting driver in Feisty, but I need feedback.

I have another issue with this driver. xrandr doesn't seem to do
rotation. (This is an issue on the Thinkpad X60 tablet.)

Before Kubuntu I used PCLinuxOS (prefer this except the display drivers
over Kubuntu)

This is a serious problem. I have this behavior with an IBM Thinkpad X60
tablet (panel resolution 1400x1050) and an external 1680x1050 Dell
monitor. Running both in clone mode at 1680x1050 makes the internal
monitor scroll (good) and the external monitor stretched and scroll
(unacceptable).

Thanks for response. Will try to-morrow, it is now past midnight.
