I had the same problem yesterday, and I still have it, but I discovered a way
to fix it temporarily.
Believe it or not, the problem has nothing to do with the nvidia driver (at
least in my case it doesn't)

NVidia driver
I think I had similar problem. After clean installation of Kubuntu
feisty beta amd64, nvidia driver did not work. After a full update the
problem was fixed.
However, I still have an error message in Xorg.0.log:
(EE) Failed to load module wfb (module does not exist, 0)

I don't think this bug is a duplicate of the bug marked above. According to
lspci I have the following graphics card:
nVidia Corporation G70 [GeForce 7600 GT] (rev a1)
This card is listed as supported in the list linked from the other bug.
