This usually indicates that there is something wrong with network-manager, i.e.
that network-manager thinks your
network connection is down. Do you have network-manager intalled? What does the
following command output for you:
$ nm-online -x ; echo $?

Network manager wasn't installed, I'm using WICD
After installing it, the problem solved.
