Stéphane, thanks for your comment. So in which screensaver is it used?
Because by default the screen just blanks and when resuming the login
prompt appears. I noticed the photo was not used there either. There is
also no ~/.face (perhaps that is the root issue in this case).

Oh and what's more - the photo itself is not even being used in the
final install (and I cannot find it anywhere either). Should this be
filed as a separate bug?

The photo should end up in ~/.face and will be used by the screensaver and
maybe the IM client.
Since the switch to lightdm it indeed no longers show up on the login screen.
