Thanks a lot. Unfortunately nothing has happened after having removed
those three files. Anything else to be done?

I reinstalled everything form scratch and everything worked perfectly. The
issue is just when you upgrade.

try this
sudo dpkg --purge --force-remove-reinstreq whoopsie
Look for /etc/group.lock, /etc/passwd.lock and /etc/shadow.lock files
and remove them.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install whoopsie
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Dear Fernando, sorry, but again no success.
Probably I follow the advice of Francisco and install completely new
without using update...

SOLUTION:
Look for /etc/group.lock, /etc/passwd.lock and /etc/shadow.lock files
and remove them.
Be careful to only remove the files ending in 'lock' or else you might
damage your system.
