I have the same sound card. It works fantastic with Ubuntu 6.06, but I get no sound from 12.04. I'm keeping myself in a partially configured limbo mode (via expert and server modes), and attempting to figure out why one version would work, but not another. alsa-utils, in 6.06 has asoundconf,

The setup works quite happily with the volume set to that level - much higher introduces distortion into the active speaker system. I have found that running movieplayer leads movieplayer crashing at startup and this leaves the audio system in an inoperable state. If I reboot the system I can
