Having this exact problem downloading Restricted Extras today and recent
days and Firefox wasn't open. DVD discs not being read - it accepts the
files with .VOB extension but not the others.

I was having exactly the same problem:
Installing Restricted Extras, Ubuntu 12.04, HP Pavillion 6000, 64-bit.
The Ubuntu Software Center froze at about 70% of Restricted Extras.
I was researching workarounds, found this page, had decided to go back
and use synaptic, and before I could kill the

close firefox when the installation freezes/hangs, it will continue and finish

This hang in installation might have to do with the flash component, which also
hung when i tried to install it from ubuntu software center alone (i.e. w/o the
whole restricted extras package). I was trying the restricted extras package
because i thought that might be a 'safer' way to get the
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

i was able to install ubuntu restricted extras successfully from
synaptic package manager
