This bug is not about the program terminal (deceptive isn't it?) but
instead seems to be nvidia binary driver related.

I have had a problem extremely similar to this. After installing Ubuntu
and then installing the Nvidia driver, terminal will not open as
described above.
My case is slightly different because I do not have an svideo cable
connected. Instead, I have a DVI LCD and a DVI-VGA converter going to a
CRT.
I will clarify... i do have to restart X to get terminal to start working after
disconnecting svideo cable.

I too have experienced the terminal not opening whilst using svideo exactly as
you have described. Only difference for me is removing TV from Nvidia settings
or disconnecting does not make the terminal start working again. I can't even
"sudo nvidia-settings" because I can't open a terminal. Uni
