repository, all the latest packages from edgy (sept 11, 2006), in particular
kernel is 2.6.17-7-generic.
Additionally, the kernel doesn't react to SysReq keys (tried SysReq-O,
SysReq-I).
It used to work in dapper but
I can only get my 2.6.17-7 kernel to boot (same symptoms and 2.6.17-6
boots fine) by changing /dev/sda1 to /dev/hda1 in the kernel parameters.
I have 3 (older) machines that exhibit the same behaviour. A fourth
(more recent) machine boots fine, but it has a SATA disk.

Having problems recompiling the at-spi package as instructed in the
wiki, it complains about missing files.
I did however manage to make a valgrind log. Hope this can be of some
use.

Just a note, this is a fresh installation from the daily snapshot image,

It has been a while since there were any updates to this bug and also it

Just for those meeting this problem, here is my procedure to login.
A better one would be to find which script sets /dev/null to crw-- just
after boot!
After booting, when the login screen appears, I type Alt+Ctrl+F1 to get a
console.
Then I login as user and:
$ sudo chmod a+rw /dev/null
unfortunately, i won't be able to help anymore,
cause of this error, my computer was completely stuck, keyboard nearly not
responding, cpu 100% busy...
I couldn't do anything else than reinstalling ubuntu.
That's what i did...
I had checked and pasted the var/log outputs with a live cd.

After suspending the notebook, resume works fine except that the
Synaptics touchpad no longer responds to any input.
Restarting the X server does not help.

You cannot expect that everything works correctly if you do not mount
the full fs tree.
Agreed, so synaptic shouldn't tell me it applied all changes
successfully, but it does. The miniterminal shows that some things did
fail. This is definately a bug.
But to be honest I think it's your failure.

There is already an debconf question for file permissions that should be
set on scponlyc. The problem is that it is not shown on installation
(using defaults on (k)ubuntu). A dpkg-reconfigure scponly brings it up
and solves the problem.

nvidia-glx depends on the virtual nvidia-kernel-1.0.8762 provides.
This is provided by the various linux-restricted-modules. If no linux-
restricted-modules is installed, it will just pick the first it finds
(2.6.15-23).

I'm on gstreamer and standard setup.
I'm thinking that I had CTRL+ALT+BACKed before watching the movie, got
some error messages when logging back in, and the interface was all
weird, like GTK1. So maybe something was just not working right.
