Ok, it is not the vesafb. It seems strange to me that this happens since
update to 2.6.17-8, because changes to agp/drm-portions of kernel-code
are documented for 2.6.17-9. Even with broken kernel-drm-code, X
normally should start up disabeling dri-part automatically.

As i try to boot from the Edgy knot 3 live-cd :
- if i boot with the "test or install Ubuntu" : it boots but i've got a black
screen (I can hear the Gnome music)
- if i boot with the "failed safe graphics" option (i.e. xforcevesa option), it

You may have a modem on your soundchip, but in general it is disabled by
default in bios if you do not have a modem port, which sometimes can be
optained from vendor as an assembly-option. Many sound controllers do
have additional (soft)-modem functionality for certain configurations.

I have a P5B and the CD and Harddrive are both on the IDE channel drived
by the JMicron
The CD is now correctly detected, the harddrive also, the files are copied on
the harddrive,

We might still be looking at different bugs here. For me (on a system
with Radeon 7200), the lockups were happening quite often (most sessions
within a few minutes), but disabling DRI did fix the problem entirely.
No lockups at all after disabling DRI (for a few months).

with rhythmbox-dbg? Run rhythmbox with gdb for that:

uninstalling most of GNOME and reinstalling it.
The dbus issue is gone, but I still have to login at least twice into

Sorry, just an update to this. Since the display is so corrupt on boot,
I was misunderstanding what was going on, and I have re-evaluated this.

The colours on usplash are wrong, particularly in the logo which is a
horrible shade of grey/purple/green. The background is brownish though,
but the progress bar is red/yellow.

I just want to comment that I hadn't noticed this bug, and reported a duplicate:

This seems good dapper-backport candidate as all dependencies are satisfied.
For Dapper at least, classpath needs to contain
/usr/share/ant/lib/ant-launcher.jar for build to succeed.
