So, thanks to pointing me to the sysylog, it's how you said...in fact the
DEVICE= parameter in hardware.conf wasn't set correctly to /dev/ttyS0 and the
daemon quits.
But why dpkg-reconfigure is able to find the correct device and restarting the
daemon
Dapper did work after I installed the fglrx drivers with a howto from
ubuntuforums. The later/final versions of Dapper worked out of box.
Edgy works out of box.
I can't reproduce this anymore.

Attached is a bz2ball with a working libsidplay2.so. It works on my
machine (TM).
(Xubuntu 6.06, all the latest updates as of 20061005 and Ubuntu's
libsidplay2 already installed on the machine. I just dropped in the
files, and everything works now. Maybe I'm just lucky?)

I see now that either of them is a dependency. That is automatically generated
from the shlibs file of libgamin which is the build dependecny of the package.
In the default install

It's somewhat intentional... Gaim changes your privacy setting on your
behalf so that invisibility works correctly. This will DEFINITELY be

I'm not sure exactly what it was, but eventually pretty much all of the
innards of the laptop got switched out (mmm warranty) and that made it
better. I'd guess that there was something a bit marginal in the
hardware, and some kernel change just pushed it over the edge. No idea
what or how.
