Ok, found the real reason:
Kernels = 2.6.16 have a feature that checks whether devices can be
given as much power as they claim to need. If there's not enough juice
(like in my case), the device is not activated. So a feature, not a bug.
The Debian bug I linked to is about notifying the user

This is a work machine, so it has to be usable - as long as the patch
didn't break my system (beta of edgy didn't, so I'm not expecting this
to), I'd also be willing to test. I'll switch my personal machine to
edgy when I get a chance, and then I can test it on that, even if it's
an alpha patch.
This minor change should be rolled into the first firefox update for
edgy. The trouble is that debian/rules overrides the icon provided; if
that code is removed then this should work correctly now (the icon has
been patched back in)

I started with a clean install of Edgy and loaded flash and NVidia
drivers. FF kept crashing when I want to pages with flash, but I changed
to 24 but color-depth and it solved the problem for me also.

So does this mean that in the final release of Edgy this problem
should've been fixed? On my Compaq Presario M2000Z I still don't have
power button, nor does the system respond to the lid.

the laptop to the right or left hdaps-gl reports it as a rotation around
