I'd like to propose a way of saving a couple of MB's on the avarage
system.
I noticed that when ubuntu starts, it also starts the update-notifier
process, which presumably handles the finding of updates, and displaying
of the update

I have no problem (well, very little problem) with Firefox needing to be

I can confirm this on Kubuntu Feisty Beta (kpdf 0.5.6). I have an HP LaserJet
2200 at work and print pdf documents often.
What's wrong with the original non patched KPDF? This bug makes Kubuntu's KPDF

OK I know it's a big hammer but removing and reinstalling gnome then
restarting metacity made this go away. I suspect a broken gnome schema,
as in some other things. Is there anything that can be done to make
schema installation more robust?

what do u mean by one-time fix, do u mean has firefox crashed befoe,
than sure, I just did not upload or report it as its a pain uploading
through rapidshare. If there is further occurence, would report it

it is a non-free driver, there is nothing we can do about it.

Note: yes it should always be installed by default, because it is meant
for blind users to be able to use their computer. Without it, they
wouldn't be able to even run apt-get or synaptic... So the solution is
I can conform that the beryl-repo packages work fantastic with my laptop
(radeon mobile x700 PCI-E) when using fglrx driver. Which I btw have to
use, as the free radeon/ati driver does not work at all with my grfx-
card+monitor (dead screen).
