[Bug 129392] Re: update-manager -d in Feisty presents no option to upgrade to Gutsy

2007-08-02 Thread tawmas
It looks like the workaround found by Jared offers you a one-time only
opportunity to upgrade.

For me, it worked the first time I tried, but I didn't have the time to
do the upgrade at once. But when I came back to do the upgrade, the
button was gone, no matter that my ~/.update-manager-core/meta-release
file is up-to-date with the text from http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/meta-
release-development

I also tried to update my ~/.update-manager-core/meta-release file again
from the given url, although the text appeared unmodified at eye
inspection, but of course it just didn't work because the new text was
indeed unmodified...

Is either Beagle or Tracker included by default in Gutsy? If so,
definitely the help should cover it. But if not, it would be a bit weird

[Bug 129878] PPPoE crash

2007-08-02 Thread Anton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pppoeconf

After installing PPPoE with pppoeconf with all defaults all works (dns adresses
from provider). After some time (around 10 min) pppoe crashes. pon dsl-provider
- starts work, 10 min- crash and so on.
. The reason is that dns adress is set to my local ethernet dsl modem. This
problem could be resolved with writing into /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf :
supersede domain-name-servers 212.188.4.10, 195.34.32.116;
where 212.188.4.10, 195.34.32.116 is my provider dns adresses. But i don't
think it's correct cause nothing was sad in pppoeconf.

Other unresolved problem is pppoe start. I choosed option to start pppoe with
system, but it doesn't (though i see connections in ifconfig). I heard the
reason is that firewall blocks all at start as a default , and if to write
pon-dslprovider at session startup all will be ok. but i don't know, and it
isn't correct if I'd like to jump among sessions.
Thanks! Hope You'll do Ubuntu better and better, I love this OS :-)

Some quick comments on the new material, which looks a definite
improvement:

There appears to be instructions on connecting to an Ekiga server using
Pidgin - isn't it better to use Ekiga for that? I found that section
confusing.

It would be cool to have some instructions for actually making a call in
Ekiga.

Is there a reason the auto-configuration wizard isn't used for the
instructions in Ekiga? It pops up when the user starts the program so
should probably be explained, and it seems to have fewer items to
complete for account creation (although it has a lot more options
regarding system setup (such as audio) which are pretty confusing.

[Bug 129631] Re: Firefox differs from Mozilla version in Feisty, Edgy

2007-08-02 Thread Elias Aarnio
Paul,

Thank you for your reply. You are absolutely right in saying that the
browser detection routine of this particular software vendor behaves
strangely.

However, here is something bug-like. If the reason of the malfunction is
that the User Agent strings of both some versions of Ubuntu Firefox
packages and debian Iceweasel packages are faulty in the way that they
do not follow the specification given by Mozilla, we should take care
that the person / persons who generate these strings know about this
episode.

I need some help locating them. It is even better if someone promises to
get this information to them.

The faultyness of the User Agent string is described in bug #48316 as
Yamal brought up.

[Bug 129879] login picture doesn't show up

2007-08-02 Thread Agent-X
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Problem: Login picture of new user does not show up in login screen.

Details:
1. Live-CD version of Ubuntu Feisty (7.04).

Steps for reproducibility:

Boot from the CD.

System - Administration - Login Window

Local - Happy Gnome with Browser - Close

System - Administration - Users and Groups

Add User - created Desktop user with the name user1

CTRL+ALT+Backspace

Login to user1

System - Preferences - About me

Chose baseball.png from /usr/share/pixmaps/faces/

Logged out.

Picture did not show up.

Possible reasons:

I read in some various places of the web, including Redhat and fedora
areas, that this is a bug with gdm. It seems like people tried fixing it
then upgrading the version, but I've noticed that users persist to have
this problem with the updated version. Maybe I'm one of them.

[Bug 129502] cannot copy from nokia 5200 mass storage device

2007-08-02 Thread Soos Gergely
I would like to add that today I tried to download from the phone a
large file (344Mb) in Printing media mode and it did not work. For a
long time the KDE's copy window said that the copying is Stalled then
the window just disappeared without copying anything. Only small files
can be downloaded.

I checked the phone with an M$ vindoze and the phone works perfectly
with that as a mass storage device.

 It would be cool to have some instructions for actually making a call in

 Is there a reason the auto-configuration wizard isn't used for the

 complete for account creation (although it has a lot more options

[Bug 129887] default snd-usb-audio alsa buffer too low (causes pops and clicks)

2007-08-02 Thread Wit Wilinski
Public bug reported:

Default sound buffer set by ALSA for USB soundcards (in my case 0d8c:0006
C-Media Electronics, Inc. with CM-106 chipset, usb-audio driver,
/proc/asound/cards says:
 0 [Audio  ]: USB-Audio - USB Audio
  USB Audio at usb-:00:1d.0-2, full speed
) is too low for ordinary, 2-channel playback. Sound skips from time to time
regardless of the system load and I/O usage. Seems the latency of PCI/USB bus
is higher than the default buffer size set by ALSA. The configuration which
resolves the problem looks like this (/etc/asound.conf):

defaults.ctl.card 0
defaults.pcm.card 0

pcm.card0 {
  type hw
  card 0
}

pcm.dmixer {
  type dmix
  ipc_key 1025
  slave {
pcm hw:0,0
period_time 0
period_size 2048
buffer_size 32768
rate 48000
  }
  bindings {
0 0
1 1
  }
}
pcm.skype {
  type asym

  playback.pcm dmixer
  capture.pcm card0
}

pcm.!default {
  type plug
  slave.pcm skype
}

The buffer_size used here might be too large, but I haven't encountered
any problems since using that configuration.

[Bug 129884] SATA drive - out of memory

2007-08-02 Thread Bastiaan Veelo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mondo

Hi!

About half-way restoring a 2-CD-R set we go out of 1GB of memory, which
causes bzip2 and afio processes to be killed, bringing the whole process
to a halt. To be exact, we get to fileset #47 at 51%. Then it does not
even respond to Ctrl-Alt-Del.

I have been monitoring top, and I could see the free memory slowly drop
to almost 0.

When I do df, besides the CD-ROM I see only /dev/shm mounted on /tmp,
and it is constantly at 412 kB used with 64 MB available, during this
whole process.

This is actually a trial recovery on a new server (so we are not in trouble
yet). But after removal of the mondo CD, the system boots off
the HDD as if nothing happened -- although I said nuke and although mondo
said that it was busy reformatting it.

So it seems to me that mondo has trouble accessing the disk, but is not
aware of the fact.

This disk is indeed a SATA, which is being accessed through libata, and
shows up as /dev/sda. Knoppix would not boot on it and I am guessing
that stock Debian would not install on it. So we switched to Ubuntu
Server 7.04, which installs and runs fine (great distro!).

Mondo was working fine on our old hardware running Debian but the old CD's
would not work on the new hardware. Booting simply
halted without a visible error message, but before filesystems could be mounted.

I was expecting that the CD's built on the new hardware with the new
distribution would work on that hardware. I was happy to see that the
recovery CD was booting, but when I did a compare it showed differences in
every single file on the system. That was when I decided to try a complete nuke
-- and I am happy that I did... kind of.

Our version of mondo is 2.20-1.1. I have posted to the mondo-devel list
too, but it has not showed up in the archive yet.

I hope we can sort this out, because mondo is a great concept.

Thanks,
Bastiaan.

The bug I reported, 127263, is clearly not a duplicate of this bug. The dbus
message is fairly harmless but the meta-release info failure is not. Please see
the analysis in 127263. I don't know how to make launchpad un-merge the bug
reports unfortunately.

[Bug 129888] Account gets disabled by connecting from other location (MSN)

2007-08-02 Thread Jaap Versteegh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

When using an MSN account and you sign in from another computer while still
connected, the MSN account gets 'disabled'. This is undesirable behaviour.
Earlier versions of gaim didn't do this (to my knowledge).
In my opinion, the account should just be disconnected, but not disabled, so it
will automatically attempt to login again at next startup.

[Bug 125340] Re: Synaptics doesn't work with multiple users in Xorg.

2007-08-02 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
It's not clear to me: was it your touchpad or your usb bluetooth mouse that
stopped working while doing the above dmesg and Xorg logs?
If I understand correctly if you logout and login again your mouse/touchpad
stops working, is this right?

Please also provide a before and after log off /proc/bus/input/devices:
1. Just after being logged in as user zxz run the following command from a
terminal:
   $ cat /proc/bus/input/devices ~/proc_bus_input_devices_zxz
2. Switch the user to drivex
3. Switch back to user zxz
4. $ LANG=C

   $ diff -ns ~/proc_bus_input_devices_zxz ~/proc_bus_input_devices_tmp
proc_bus_input_devices_diff-ns

[Bug 129895] Xorg eating computer time, hard crashing

2007-08-02 Thread Sandwich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I have since upgrading my computer to a core 2 duo, been experiencing
random 'freezing' where my mouse still moves, but my keyboard, and X in
general is completely unresponsive (alt+prntscrn+k/b/etc still work but
I cant even toggle caps/num lock). I can ssh to it and restart X and my
memory usage of 2+gigs shrinks to under 300megs, and my system is
completely cured (until Xorg eats my processor clocks again). The crash
comes all at once, and is very sudden, but I noticed after sudo ps
aux'ing on the locked box through ssh, that the process
'/usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 -br -audit 0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten
tcp vt9' has a status of SLs+ and is consuming 5:20 compared to
firefox's 1:10. Also closing firefox-bin and all occurances of it does
very little to negate the processor and memory hogging of Xorg. I
believe this is related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/98783 and I have
entered a forum post http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3120369
summarizing my experiences and the attempts to troubleshoot this from
this forum thread
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=412125highlight=feisty+freezes.
I can happily upload anything necessary to help trouble shoot this. For
important dmesg output, lspci output, and ps output check the forum
post.
