[Bug 149714] Suspend no longer works after upgrade to 7.10
Public bug reported: I'm not sure if my issue is a duplicate of other's, but suspend no longer works on my system after upgrading to the latest -beta. This is on an AMD64 (64-bit install) with an nVidia card, proprietary drivers not loaded. I started running tests (gotten from http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/power/basic-pm-debugging.txt) in recovery mode to test Suspend / Resume: Running: echo reboot /sys/power/disk; echo disk /sys/power/state reboots my computer, but trashes my swapfile. After re-running mkswap on /dev/hda4 (and adding resume=/dev/hda4 to grub command line), I am able to resume, but the text console is corrupted. Its difficult to describe, but pressing enter just scrolls the ubuntu logo (which never goes away) to the left. At the bottom, there is a garbled white strip with random pixel noise that increases by one pixel each time I press enter. It does look as if it responds to commands, though. Runing: echo test /sys/power/disk; echo disk /sys/power/state brings the system back fine, repeatedly. ** Affects: linux-kernel-di-amd64-2.6 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Suspend no longer works after upgrade to 7.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/149714 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks
Here is how I permanently fixed it: 1) make a file named 99-hdd-spin-fix.sh. The important thing is starting with 99. 2) make sure the file contains the following 2 lines (fix it if you have PATA HDD): #!/bin/sh hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda 3) copy this file to 3 locations: /etc/acpi/suspend.d/ /etc/acpi/resume.d/ /etc/acpi/start.d/ Voila! After that the HDD never spins down on power (looks like it actually spins down on battery at modest rate). [Bug 149725] suggestion for disk partition during installation
Public bug reported: There are a lot of users that use Ubuntu as first Linux distribution. Partitioning is always the more delicate operation, especially for dual- boot, but also because most new users have confused ideas about it. So, I'd like to have, during partitioning operations, both in live and alternate installation method, a guide to partitioning. In alternate, it can be positioned when it's asked for the partition metod (automatic or manual). In this guide, there will be an introduction of partitions in Linux, for example, what's /, what's /home and what's swap, and so on: how external disk are mounted etc etc. In this way, new user can have more clear ideas when he must to partion the disk (especially in manual mode). [Bug 149726] Re: [Gutsy] xorg-driver-fglrx: multihead breaks catastrophicly
Thanks for the video, that helps eliminate a variety of possibilities. Since you say it works ok with Feisty, presumably one of the changes between Feisty and Gutsy caused it. Could you try booting some intermediate versions, such as Tribe 3 or Tribe 5? Alternatively, or in addition, could you try downgrading your fglrx driver? Use the drivers from ATI's website. There are also some newer fglrx versions available. I'm also curious if the issue is specific to DVI, or if it shows up with VGA as well, and if anything similar happens when using the -ati driver. I don't know if you're able to test either of these, but if so it could be useful data. Please also attach your xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log files, as well as the output from lscpi -vvnn in case we need your video card's pci id. ** Changed in: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22 (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- [Gutsy] xorg-driver-fglrx: multihead breaks catastrophicly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/149726 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 139230] Re: /var is mounted too late during the init sequence
Sadly the fault here is in the FHS, which specifies that those two directories are under /var -- we need files in both directories to be able to mount /var, so it's a bit of a chicken and egg situation. The Ubuntu solution is reasonably elegant (bind-mount so that /var/run and /var/lock are available whether you mount or unmount /var -- but it means a little bit of extra work to set it up. A recent fix went in that creates these directories on the root filesystem on shutdown if they don't already exist, this should solve 95% of the problem since after adding a /var, you'll reboot and it'll take care of putting in the necessary mount points ** Changed in: sysvinit (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Fix Released -- /var is mounted too late during the init sequence https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/139230 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 119990] Re: [gutsy] fonts too big in Qt based apps
I looked to apply the Björn workaround and it is not possible for Gutsy. There's no qtrc file in the /etc/qt3 directory, only qt_plugins_3.3rc and this file doesn't contain above data. The bug is actually filled for qt-x11-free package but that package isn't in the ubuntu repositories. I think that there would be a more appropriate Package for this bug than qt-x11-free.
