[Bug 149709] Re: (evolution:7983): camel-CRITICAL **: get_message_info: assertion `folder-summary != NULL' failed

2007-10-06 Thread Pirx
Additional information:

The delayed start may be a Gnome issue, which does not affect all apps,
e.g. Firefox and OpenOffice 2.3 (AFTER COMPLETE RE-INSTALL) do not have
this issue, while Evolution (EVEN AFTER COMPLETE RE-INSTALL), gedit,
terminal etc. do have this problem.

This probably needs to be reported somewhere else also, but the Gusty

the Partition Editor Program at 53% after clicking the install icon on

[Bug 93360] Re: Dhcdbd: message_handler: message handler not found under /com/redhat/dhcp/eth1 for sub-path eth1.dbus.get.reason

2007-10-06 Thread ironstorm
Tried to remove dhcdbd and lost my SSH session just now. The machine
dropped off the network when it go to:

Removing network-manager-kde ...
Removing network-manager ...
 * Stopping network connection manager NetworkManager

This is going to be a problem for people who run on headless servers...

If the bug is not going to get fixed, then someone should write a
workaround script for people to use during upgrades...

Something like:
sudo nohup workaround-upgrade.sh # prevent the following script being
terminated if the session hangs up
   #!/bin/sh
aptitude remove network-manager network-manager-kde # wipe out the nasty
packages that cause the problem
   sleep 5

[Bug 149714] Suspend no longer works after upgrade to 7.10

2007-10-06 Thread Adam Petaccia
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure if my issue is a duplicate of other's, but suspend no longer works
on my system after upgrading to the latest -beta. This is on an AMD64 (64-bit
install) with an nVidia card, proprietary drivers not loaded. I started
running tests (gotten from
http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/power/basic-pm-debugging.txt) in
recovery mode to test Suspend / Resume:
Running: echo reboot /sys/power/disk; echo disk /sys/power/state reboots
my computer, but trashes my swapfile. After re-running mkswap on /dev/hda4
(and adding resume=/dev/hda4 to grub command line), I am able to resume, but
the text console is corrupted. Its difficult to describe, but pressing enter
just scrolls the ubuntu logo (which never goes away) to the left. At the
bottom, there is a garbled white strip with random pixel noise that increases
by one pixel each time I press enter. It does look as if it responds to
commands, though.

Runing: echo test /sys/power/disk; echo disk /sys/power/state
brings the system back fine, repeatedly.

[Bug 68370] Re: Synaptics touchpad not enabled for second X display

Thanks for this!

I don't know if it should be high or medium, because this bug will
happens on 100% of laptop computers ( which may represent 50% of all

crashed. I my point of view, that's high!

At least if we keep medium priority, I think that this bug would need to
be taken very seriously for the points I mentioned above.

- When right clicking on a .mp3 file that is accessed from a windows share

Confirmed. Same here (tried twice).

- Compaq Presario XL307 (Celeron 600, 384MB RAM)
- Fresh install from scratch, no other OS on machine
- Installing in French (Paris, French keyboard)

- Installation goes smoothly up to 87%, configures network, finds
mirror, displays downloading languages packs, some file seems to be
actually downloaded, then the progress stops forever at 87% with
ubiquity eating 100% CPU forever.

[Bug 149719] ddccontrol should set device permissions with udev

2007-10-06 Thread Emmet Hikory
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ddccontrol

The documentation for ddccontrol indicates that the devices are
restricted to root access by default, and that in order to provide
access to normal users, one should execute `chmod a+rw /dev/i2c-*`. As
a workaround, there is a gksu entry in the gddccontrol .desktop file.

In preference, there should be a udev rule that grants access to these
devices to a restricted group so that gksu is no longer required.

[Bug 132117] Re: xen guest domains won't start Error: Device 0 (vif) could not be connected. Could not find bridge, and none was specified

To clarify: this only fixes one of numerous issues that could cause this
behaviour, and is addressed in XenSource's bugzilla
(http://bugzilla.xensource.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=950). A more
appropriate solution may be to rehash the xen-scripts to be more ubuntu
specific (at the very least give more useful error output).
I will look into putting together a batch of pre-run tests to optionally add to
the xen-scripts and attach to this ticket.

[Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks

2007-10-06 Thread TDB
Here is how I permanently fixed it:

1) make a file named 99-hdd-spin-fix.sh. The important thing is starting with
99.
2) make sure the file contains the following 2 lines (fix it if you have PATA
HDD):
#!/bin/sh
hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda
3) copy this file to 3 locations:
/etc/acpi/suspend.d/
/etc/acpi/resume.d/
/etc/acpi/start.d/

Voila! After that the HDD never spins down on power (looks like it actually
spins down on battery at modest rate).
Sorry if the instruction is too detailed, no offense.

I confirm this also

linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22-13-generic is missing, and until then I
cannot use my nvidia card and am using a low res by default :( it just
shuts off the monitor - ctrl + alt + backspace brings it backup up, i've
had this problem before but i've done a re-check of the updates and
still nothing - synaptic reports

linux-restricted-modules-generic:
Depends: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22-13-generic but it is not installable

arrgghh this sucks i'm without a higher res until then. I got the gui by sudo
rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf sudo rm /etc/X11/rexorg.conf

in other words doing a rename and well without an xorg.conf the nvidia
glx drivers kick in, of course I could chose to higher res via the
resolution manager.. :P but then my icons on my taskbar will prob. get
all messed up when it is ready and downloadable..

Just amazing! Thanks again. How long are those binaries held back for?

[Bug 149661] Re: [Gutsy] Update fails to install linux-restricted-modules-generic

2007-10-06 Thread nowshining
as on the other I also confirm on a Dell 4600i running Nvidia Fx5200
with the Nvidia binary i can get a gui at least on mine because i mved
the xorg to rexorg.conf and that way it uses the the nvidia glx or
whatever from the distro, i prob. can get higher res by screen
resolution, however then prob. My taskbar will get messed up when I do
so and all gets returned to normal..

So i'm a confirmer.

:(

last time this happened it was there however now I always know to check
restricted drivers manager the program and if it throws up that error
then i know what's wrong. I did do a re-check since last time I did was
hours ago and well nope still no go..

[Bug 149297] Re: xserver-xorg-video-intel package missing changelog

2007-10-06 Thread Gert Kulyk
I think it is rather related due to build errors once encountered by the
packager, not investigating the consequences of the changes: the
affected line reads:

# dh_installchangelogs ChangeLog

but there is no longer an upstream ChangeLog file in the orig.tar.gz
file. So you'll have to remove the ChangeLog statement after
dh_installchagelogs command, otherwise the build will fail.

[Toshiba U200, intel gma 945, kubuntu gutsy up-to-date]

I get the issue (dark screen with grey squares) on my kubuntu gutsy (new

And I get more often this issue than in feisty (see last paragraph for
explanation...) !
Notice that one time I got the same issue with ctrl-alt-bksp trying to restart
my X server.

I agree that in feisty, i disabled splash (removing splash from grub)
and it worked better, but the issue happened from time to time anyways.

It's really a bad issue, causing bad feeling to new users.

[Bug 149725] suggestion for disk partition during installation

2007-10-06 Thread jepessen
Public bug reported:

There are a lot of users that use Ubuntu as first Linux distribution.

Partitioning is always the more delicate operation, especially for dual-
boot, but also because most new users have confused ideas about it.

So, I'd like to have, during partitioning operations, both in live and
alternate installation method, a guide to partitioning. In alternate, it
can be positioned when it's asked for the partition metod (automatic or
manual).

In this guide, there will be an introduction of partitions in Linux, for
example, what's /, what's /home and what's swap, and so on: how external
disk are mounted etc etc.

In this way, new user can have more clear ideas when he must to partion
the disk (especially in manual mode). I think that this guide during
installation can be very helpful.

All,

Please reboot and go back into 2.6.22.12 kernel in the grub menuthis
will give you back your NVIDIA driver and WIFI connection. When
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22-13-generic is installed in updates then
you can use 2.6.22.13 kernel.

Re: [Bug 128876] Re: strigidaemon causes 100% CPU and crashes after a while

2007-10-06 Thread Alberto Valero
I believe that there is just a bug. The CPU load is too high for an
indexing daemon. If you compare it with Tracker or Google desktop on the
same PC you will see that these ones are much more lighter.

Hope that the stable release of Kubuntu 7.10 fixes it. Anyway tracker
works goot, aso in KDE.

[Bug 149726] [Gutsy] xorg-driver-fglrx: multihead breaks catastrophicly

2007-10-06 Thread Colin Alston
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg-driver-fglrx

On Gutsy (fully upgraded) since kernel 2.6.22 introduced (I think!)
connecting an external display regardless of XOrg configuration causes
hang on X initialisation and odd thin green vertical lines on the
screen.

Hardware is ATI X700 in a Fujitsu-Siemens M1437G, monitor output is DVI
to DVI.

Made a video of boot sequence here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKrOJ08jAe8

Only happens when an external monitor is connected. Same scenario is not
a problem in Feisty.

Hi Bryce,

Feisty is fine, as is edgy and dapper. I think that gutsy's default is
to run the live cd with compositing enabled isn't it? If so, I think
that's most likely the problem in this case. I'm surprised that more
people don't have issues.

[Bug 149729] [Gutsy] dpkg thinks /usr/share/cups/model/gutenprint should exist

2007-10-06 Thread Joseph Fannin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cupsys-driver-gutenprint

The output of `dpkg -L cupsys-driver-gutenprint` indicated that dpkg
thinks /usr/share/cups/model/gutenprint should exist, but it is not
present even after purging the package (needed --force-depends) and
reinstalling it.

The symlink is present in the package - it's there when the deb is
extracted with `dpkg-deb -x`.

Maybe the symlink is not being created because its target
(/usr/share/ppds/gutenprint) does not exist?

I don't know if this will cause an actual problem, but it doesn't seem
right that dpkg thinks it's installed a file, but hasn't.

[Bug 149728] [Gutsy]Socks proxy settings are ignored by Evolution and Apt

2007-10-06 Thread der_vegi
Public bug reported:

I am running Gutsy Beta with all the updates until Oct. 5th on an AMD64
machine.

Here's the problem: I am connecting to the internet over WLAN, using a VPN
connection and a proxy is needed for the network. The proxy of the normal
network blocks most ports, including POP, SMTP etc., but SSH is open. Setting
this proxy in system = settings = network proxy, apt recoginzes it and I can
install updates and new packages.
Trying to use a SSH proxy with 'ssh -D 1080 [EMAIL PROTECTED]' and setting this
as a socks proxy in Gnome (system = settings = network proxy: localhost and
1080), it doesn't work. I cannot download updates and Evolution (which uses
these settings?) doesn't connect either. If I set exactly the same thing in
Firefox, I can browse the web without a problem and Thunderbird works, too.

[Bug 149726] Re: [Gutsy] xorg-driver-fglrx: multihead breaks catastrophicly

2007-10-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thanks for the video, that helps eliminate a variety of possibilities.

Since you say it works ok with Feisty, presumably one of the changes
between Feisty and Gutsy caused it.

Could you try booting some intermediate versions, such as Tribe 3 or
Tribe 5?

Alternatively, or in addition, could you try downgrading your fglrx
driver? Use the drivers from ATI's website. There are also some newer
fglrx versions available.

I'm also curious if the issue is specific to DVI, or if it shows up with
VGA as well, and if anything similar happens when using the -ati driver.
I don't know if you're able to test either of these, but if so it could
be useful data.

Please also attach your xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log files, as well
as the output from lscpi -vvnn in case we need your video card's pci id.

[Bug 139230] Re: /var is mounted too late during the init sequence

2007-10-06 Thread Scott James Remnant
Sadly the fault here is in the FHS, which specifies that those two
directories are under /var -- we need files in both directories to be
able to mount /var, so it's a bit of a chicken and egg situation. The
Ubuntu solution is reasonably elegant (bind-mount so that /var/run and
/var/lock are available whether you mount or unmount /var -- but it
means a little bit of extra work to set it up.

A recent fix went in that creates these directories on the root
filesystem on shutdown if they don't already exist, this should solve
95% of the problem since after adding a /var, you'll reboot and it'll
take care of putting in the necessary mount points

[Bug 119990] Re: [gutsy] fonts too big in Qt based apps

I looked to apply the Björn workaround and it is not possible for Gutsy.
There's no qtrc file in the /etc/qt3 directory, only qt_plugins_3.3rc
and this file doesn't contain above data.

The bug is actually filled for qt-x11-free package but that package
isn't in the ubuntu repositories. I think that there would be a more
appropriate Package for this bug than qt-x11-free. Finding this would
greatly help this bug report.

[Bug 145709] Re: Qt3 ~/.qt owner root

2007-10-06 Thread Saïvann Carignan
I confirm the existence of that bug. More people experienced the same
problems in the duplicate bug #119990.

Fonts are big and ugly in HPLIP and VirtualBox, running Ubuntu Gutsy
with all updates.

[Bug 149732] Re: After last update,Xorg can't want to start

2007-10-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thank you for reporting this issue in Ubuntu. Unfortunately you have
failed to provide any information that will help to debug it.

Please explain what the problem is in detail. Also you must attach your
/etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log, as well as the output from
lspci -vvnn.

2007-10-06 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Does somebody can confirm if adding/removing a entry for gnome-power-
manager in sessions fixes the problem? It does in my case but this
would need to be confirmed

Alunj : Yes, we speak exactly about the same bug.
